An OIC Geneva Ambassadorial level meeting took place on 13 October 2015 the Palais des Nations, prior to the Global Consultations for the World Humanitarian Summit (14-16 October 2015) organized in Geneva. The meeting was convened at the request of the Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs. The objective of the meeting was to discuss the preparation for the World Humanitarian Summit and identify the issues of importance from the perspective of the OIC Member States. The meeting was chaired by the Ambassador of Pakistan H.E., Ms Tehmina JANJUA, in her capacity of OIC Geneva Group Coordinator for Human Rights ans Humanitarian affairs.
Panellists of the meeting included Mr Stephen O’BRIEN, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Dr Jamila MAHMOUD, Chief of the WHS Secretariat, Mr Berk BARAN, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Turkey, in his capacity of the WHS host country and H.E. Ambassador Hesham YOUSSEF, OIC Assistant Secretary General.
OIC participates in the flag raising ceremony for the Holy See and the State of Palestine
The Permanent Delegation of the OIC to the United Nations Office in Geneva, headed by its Permanent Observer, Ambassador Slimane Chikh, participated in the flag raising ceremony for the Holy See and the State of Palestine, which took place on 13 October 2015 at the Allée des Drapeaux of the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
During his speech, H.E. Dr. Riad Malki, the Foreign Affairs Minister of the State of Palestine, underlined the importance of raising the flag that represents a summary of Palestinian people’s plight for freedom and justice and its determination to become a full-fledged member of the United Nations.
He expressed his confidence that one day – soon – the Palestinian people shall celebrate with all peace-loving nations and peoples from around the world raising the Palestinian flag over their capital Jerusalem.
OIC participates in the side-event on Islamophobia at the margins of the 30th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva
Ambassador Slimane Chikh, Permanent Representative of the OIC, participated as a panellist in the side event entitled “Islamophobia in French-speaking countries in Europe: the Islamophobia in the Media”, organized on 29 September 2015 by a group of civil society organizations at the margins of the 30th regular session of the Human Rights Council.
During his presentation, the Ambassador has briefly presented the OIC efforts in the fight against Islamophobia, and stressed the Organization’s commitment to continue combatting extremism in its various forms. Furthermore, he referred to the latest report of OIC Islamophobia Observatory and informed that OIC institutions agreed to increase joint collaboration and formulate a plan to counter extreme violence, sectarianism and Islamophobia. In the same vein, he recalled the importance of the HRC resolution 16/18 and the Istanbul Process and emphasized the importance of education for youth to transmit “a culture of tolerance and peace”.
OIC Geneva Permanent Observer participates in the IDB Panel on Reducing Trade Costs in OIC Member Countries at the WTO
Ambassador Slimane Chikh has participated as a panellist in the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group’s Plenary Session on “Reducing Trade Costs in the OIC Member Countries”, which was held on 30 June 2015 from 15h to 17h at WTO Headquarters in Geneva, at the occasion of the 5th Global Review of Aid for Trade.
The objective of this regionally focused session was to address efforts to reduce the cost of trade among IDB Group Members in the context of a dynamic picture, characterised by continued high rates of growth of some IDB members, on-going economic instability among others, and significant fiscal challenges arising from slowing commodity prices for many. The session aimed also at examining the issue of trade facilitation by providing the examples of global excellence in transport and logistics in some IDB Member States and the challenges arising from cumbersome and time-consuming border procedures found elsewhere.
The OIC Secretary General, H.E. Mr Iyad Ameen Madani hosted a reception at the sidelines of the High-level segment of the 28th Session of the Human Rights Council on 2 March 2015. OIC Member States Ambassadors, other Ambassadors and delegation representatives to the UN at Geneva and distinguished participants from non-governmentales organizations attended the reception. The reception gave the opportunity to announce the fifth session of the Istanbul Process on the implementation of the Human Rights Council resolution 16/18, to be held in June 2015 at the OIC Headquarters in Jedddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in a convivial atmosphere.
OIC Permanent Delegation in Geneva celebrated the forty-fifth anniversary of the Organization by hosting a roundtable discussion on the South-South cooperation
The OIC Permanent Delegation in Geneva organised a roundtable discussion focusing on the South-South cooperation on 29 September 2014 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The roundtable discussion aimed at sharing views of different partners on how to better advance South-South cooperation both inside and between specific regional groups, but also through exchange of best practices and lessons learned among different regional entities, multilateral institutions and international organisations. The event further focused on how enriching successful experiences of some developing countries can help others to better shape and reach sustainable development goals.
The Acting Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva, Mr Mr Michael MØLLER opened the discussisons and, high-level speakers representing Africa Progress Panel, UNCTAD, UNDP and the South Centre, as well as from the OIC subsidiary organs ICDT and SESRIC addressed the participants.
The roundtable was followed by a reception hosted by the Permanent Delegation and Members of the OIC in Geneva.
