Meetings of The OIC Secretary General in Ankara

His Excellency the President of Turkey Ahmet Necdet Sezer received, Thursday morning October 18, 2001, at the Presidential Palace in Ankara, Dr.Abdelouahed Belkeziz, Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). The talks in the meeting focused on current issues and relations between the Republic of Turkey and the OIC.

The Secretary General was also received by Mr. Bulent Ecevit, Prime Minister of Turkey, in his office at the government headquarters. General political issues, as well as the OIC role in the developments pertaining to combating international terrorism were discussed. The two sides also addressed the current situation following the events of September 11, 2001, and how to deal with it from an Islamic perspective.

At the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the Secretary General held an extended working session with Mr. Ismail Cem, Minister of Foreign Affairs. Talks centered on a number of issues of concern to the two sides and on reviewing Turkish-OIC relations. Discussion also focused on the subject of combating terrorism, the OIC role in condemning terrorism and action taken to improve the image of Islam worldwide, and project its true bright face.

Turkish Minister of State Mr. Mehemet Kitcek Gilar hosted a lunch banquet in honour of H.E. the OIC Secretary General. The banquet provided the opportunity for reviewing a number of current issues, foremost among which were international terrorism and the situation in Afghanistan. The two sides expressed their keenness to act so that the Afghan people may avoid harm and losses as a consequence of the on-going military operations there. They also stressed the necessity of action to show the world the shining image of Islam.
