OIC Press Release
|11 August 2001|
Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Dr. Abdelouahed Belkiziz has followed with extreme concern the arbitrary and illegitimate actions perpetrated by forces of Israeli occupation, highlighted by the use of deadly military aircraft to destroy civilian installations and inflict heavy losses among the unarmed Palestinian people, in contravention of all international conventions, laws and agreements in addition to the occupations of Orient House and other Palestinian institutions in the city of Al-Quds Al-Sharif.
The Secretary General expressed his strong condemnation of these aggressive and illegitimate Israeli practices, considering them as grave political escalation that exposes harboured intentions to wipe out all traces of the agreements concluded with the Palestinian side since the Madrid Accord, as Israel has continued to raise all kinds of pretexts to revoke its previous commitments and renege on its obligations.
The Secretary General stated that the Islamic World was monitoring with indignation and denunciation those provocative Israeli measures which profoundly hurt Muslim sentiments, especially in relation to the city of Al-Quds Al-Sharif; further adding that those aggressive and illegal practices would only intensify the resolve of Muslims all over the world to defend the rights of the Palestinian people, support them in order to put an end to occupation, remove Israeli settlements and establish a Palestinian independent state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as it capital. He considered the only solution to halt the cycle of conflict in the Middle East was for Israel to apply the resolutions of the international legitimacy and implement the agreements concluded with the Palestinian National Authority.
The OIC Secretary General addressed an urgent appeal to the Co-sponsors of the Peace Process as well as the UN Secretary General to expeditiously intervene to halt these aggressions, provide international protection for the unarmed Palestinian people and ensure the return of the Palestinian institutions in Al-Quds to their previous position in order to continue performing their role as conceived within the framework of the peace process.
