OIC Press Release
|10 April 2001|
The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference has been following with deep concern and close interest the serious developments in the Palestinian territories following the decision by the Israeli Prime Minister to allow the Jews to enter the precincts of the Blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.
This dangerous escalation comes at a time when the pace of Israeli settlement activities is being heightened in the occupied Arab territories, aggressive bombardment of the Palestinian residential quarters intensified, and repugnant racist Zionist voices are being raised to call for more bloodshed as the assassinations of the leaders of Palestinian civil society at the hands of the Israeli security forces continue which are tantamount to criminal acts that fall under state terrorism.
As the Secretary General expresses his strong condemnation of these aggressive and illegitimate practices by the Israeli government, he warns of the dire consequences of implementing the decision of the Israeli Prime Minister to allow Jewish extremists to enter the precincts of the Blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and Al-Haram Al-Sharif, as such an act can only explode the situation in the region on a large scale, will be viewed as an act of defiance of the Islamic Ummah and of its sacred religious sentiments, and can only add to the complications of the situation in the Middle East region and wreck its chances for peace.
The Secretary-General also expresses his appreciation of the stand taken by the European Union condemning the Israeli settlement activities, welcomes the position of the American State Department rejecting Israel’s policy to continually expand the settlements and its latest attempt to assassinate a number of Palestinian security chiefs, and consider this position a positive one and a step in the right direction.
The Secretary General avails himself of this opportunity to appeal to the international community to endeavor to put an end to the Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people and provide them with the necessary international protection and affirms the unshakable position of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to defend the cause of Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif and calls on Member States to speed up the provision of all forms of assistance and support to the Palestinian people in their Just struggle to recover their inalienable national rights, Including the right to return, self-determination, and the establishment of their independent state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
