OIC Press Release
|14 March 2001|
The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference has been following with deep concern and close interest the serious developments ensuing from the persistent aggressive Israeli practices against the Palestinians which have recently escalated in an alarming and extremely disturbing manner and caused so far the death of hundreds of Palestinians, the injury of thousands more, and the destruction of the Palestinian economic infrastructure through the policy of blockade, closures, and starvation leading to a halt of the peace process and the complete loss of confidence on the part of the Palestinians in this process.
Given this precarious situation, the Organization of the Islamic Conference appeals to the international community and particularly the co-sponsors of the peace process to move urgently to put an end to the Israeli aggressions, practices, and measures against the defenseless Palestinian people and calls on the United Nations and the international Security Council to work to secure for them the necessary international protection, lift the embargo and blockade imposed on them with a view to fostering the proper climate that is conducive to a resumption of the peace process in the Middle East from where it had been left off, in accordance with the foundations of that process, particularly Security Council resolutions Nos. 242 and 338, the land-for-peace principle, and the UN General Assembly resolution No. 194 which guarantee the full Israeli withdrawal from the Arab and Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including Al-Quds Al-Sharif, and provide for enabling the Palestinian people to regain their inalienable national rights, including the right to return to their homes, to their possessions, and to the establishment of their independent state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
