Dr. Abdelouahed Belkeziz, the OIC Secretary General arrives in Jeddah on Sunday 19 Shawal 1421 H (14 January 2001) to take up his office at the head of the General Secretariat having been elected by consensus by the Foreign Ministers of the OIC Member States at their Twenty-seventh Meeting which was held in June of last year (2000) in Kuala Lumpur.
The Monarch of Morocco, King Mohammed VI had received Dr. Belkeziz on Thursday 4 January 2001 at the Royal Palace in Marrakech on the occasion of his joining his new office. The Moroccan monarch reassured the OIC new Secretary General of the Moroccan Kingdom’s full support to the OIC, its eager attachment to the enhancement of the mechanisms of Joint Islamic Action and its unfailing readiness to back up the OIC’s efforts in support of Islamic causes in all fora, foremost of which is the cause of Al-Quds Al-Sharif.
It may be recalled here that Dr. Belkeziz is taking up office at the head of the OIC General Secretariat as a successor to Dr. Azeddine Laraki who left the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia last week after having attended a farewell party held in his honour at the General Secretariat headquarters in Jeddah on Monday, 2 January 2001 at which Assistant Secretary General, Political Affairs, Ambassador Ibrahim Bakr delivered a speech on behalf of the OIC General Secretariat’s staff, expressing their lasting devotion and esteem, followed by another speech delivered by Dr. Laraki himself in which he took stock of the OIC’s achievements over the last short period and addressed his thanks to all the General Secretariat’s staff for their cooperation and support.
