OIC Press Release
|12 September 2000|
Dr. Azeddine Laraki, Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference delivered a statement at the UN Millennium Summit Conference, on Friday 8 September 2000, at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Dr. Laraki pointed out that the world has entered the Twenty-first Century with great hopes that are not however devoid of certain discouraging obstacles and disillusions, faced with the challenges of globalization; which entails that the world is now standing at a crossroads of developments, trends and events which are susceptible to either carry the threat of an all-out devastation or to lead to a better future.
The Secretary General added: That it was imperative, rather indispensable, as we continue our progress towards the achievement of this goal, that an ambience of freedom and justice prevails all over the world countries and that the right to self-determination be exercised in those areas that are still deprived of it. And here particular mention should be made of the right to self-determination for the peoples of Palestine and Kashmir. Dr. Laraki laid stress at the same time, on the need for the United Nations to pay attention to freeing those peoples that are still denied the right to self-determination, of these bonds and to enable them to regain their dignity.
In addressing the subject of globalization, Dr. Laraki pointed out that he shared the views of Mr. Kofi Annan as to the need to turn globalization into a driving force that would extricate people from misery and hardship, rather than a force weighing them down.
The Secretary General had an intensive schedule of activities during the Millennium Summit, as he met with Their Excellencies Sayed Mohammad Khatami, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Chairman of the 8th Islamic Summit, as well as Omar Hassan Al-Bashir, President of the Republic of Sudan, Ali Abdullah Saleh, President of the Republic of Yemen, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal, Boris Trantski, President of the Republic of Macedonia, and Faysal Al-Saeed, Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the Millennium Summit. These meetings and audiences addressed the various aspects of joint Islamic action and the cooperation existing between the Member States and the OIC General Secretariat.
