OIC Press Release
|30 October 1999|
The Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Dr. Azeddine Laraki, is monitoring with deep concern the bloody events which have been going for some time in Chechnya as a result of the massive military offensive waged by the Russian forces.
His Excellency Dr. Azeddine Laraki strongly condemns the air strikes and rocket attacks on heavily populated civilian areas, the besieging of fleeing refugees and the massacre of hundreds of innocent people. Such actions, he notes, are impossible to justify under the pretext of combating so-called terrorism.
Dr. Laraki emphasizes that the Russian-Chechnyan feud can in no way be resolved by indiscriminate shelling, the siege of cities and villages and the destruction of infrastructures, but through dialogue and negotiations conducive to peace and stability in the Caucasus, in general, and in Chechnya, in particular.
