Laraki at the Meeting of the Group of Experts on “Islamic Information and Cyberspace” Project:

Coming Era Focuses on Information Necessity of Strong Islamic Presence in Fields and Space of International Communication

The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Dr. Azeddine Laraki emphasized that the world is approaching a new era based mainly on information, in which issues of communication, especially media connected with space, will be of profound interest. Islamic States are, therefore, obliged to deal consciously and responsibly with their respective media by utilizing all available potentials of satellite channels of the various member states aimed at achieving objectives charted in the information strategy of the member states.

The above statement was made within the context of an address of Dr. Azeddine Laraki which was delivered by the Assistant Secretary General for Information, Cultural and Social Affairs, Ambassador Ibrahim Auf to the Fifth Meeting of the Group of Experts On Studying the “Islamic Information and Cyberspace Project”, which begin its proceedings on Tuesday 17 Rajab 1420H (26 October 1999) at the OIC Headquarters in Jeddah.

The Secretary General recalled what he had highlighted at some other occasions: that the limitation of Islamic media was not confined only to the inability of their mechanisms to handle the speed of the flow of news and information which characterizes foreign mass media, but also their failure to penetrate communication space of our age. He reminded the participants of the importance of activating elements of a strategy on communication space, adding that this was, in fact, finalization of the work carried out by their colleagues last week aimed at updating the mechanisms of the information strategy of the member states and identifying the necessary priorities thereof.

The OIC Secretary General requested the maintenance of multilateral cooperation between governmental information institutions and private mass media in the member states in order to achieve a well-planned joint action that would respond to the needs of the Islamic Ummah and realize a strong, effective and consistent presence in the space and domains of international communication and information in a fruitful and satisfactory manner.

On the other hand, the head of the delegation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Mohammad Al Suraihi, who was elected Chairman of the Meeting, conveyed to the participants the greetings of His Excellency the Minister of Information of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dr. Abdusalam Al-Farsi. He wished them every success in their deliberations which would contribute to the support of the OIC.

The Chairman of the Meeting reviewed the recommendations of the 4th Meeting of the Group of Experts On Studying the Islamic Information and Cyberspace Project and urged the attendees to enrich the discussion by introducing sound views and proposals that would result in the activation of the implementation mechanism of the project.

A general discussion was conducted on the modality of utilizing the potentials of the satellite channels of member states.

The Meeting is expected to end today Wednesday 27 October instant.
