The Fifth Meeting of the Experts Group on Studying Islamic Information and Cyberspace Project (formerly Islamvision) starts its proceedings on Tuesday 17 Rajab 1420H (26 October 1999) at the Headquarters of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Jeddah, in implementation of a recommendation adopted, in this regard, by the First Meeting of the Ministerial Follow-up Committee of the Fourth Session of the Islamic Conference of Information Ministers which had been held in Dakar, Republic of Senegal.
In addition to the feasibility of the project, the Experts Group will consider the capabilities and means of implementing the Islamic Information and Cyberspace project. The latter aims, inter-alia, at creating a qualitative and advanced move in joint Islamic action, particularly in view of huge revolution in communication systems as well as successive developments in information technology and exchange of news and information. This makes it incumbent on the Islamic States to keep abreast of such changes and confront challenges they generate. The aim is to serve Islamic issues and values and promote the higher interests of the Ummah, including the strengthening of understanding and solidarity among the peoples and states of the Islamic World.
The meeting is attended by experts in the technological, programme and financial fields from the member states of the afore-mentioned Ministerial Follow-up Committee, namely, Sultanate of Oman, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Arab Republic of Egypt, State of Kuwait, Republic of Senegal, Malaysia and the Islamic Republic of Iran, which the Committee approved its membership of the Group. The meeting is also attended by a delegation representing the OIC General Secretariat. The Islamic States Broadcasting Corporation (ISBO) and the International Islamic News Agency (IINA) are attending the meeting as observers. The Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) and (Arabsat) as well as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are also attending as invitees.
