In the first initiative of its kind, a delegation from the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) met representatives of the European Troika in Helsinki, capital of Finland, on October 20, 1999.
The meeting aimed at exploring areas of cooperation between the OIC and the European Union (EU) as well as charting broadlines for their next contacts.
The meeting was attended on the OIC side by representatives of: the Chairman of the Eighth Islamic Summit Conference (Islamic Republic of Iran), Chairman of the 26th Session of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (Burkina Faso) as well as the General Secretariat of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, while the European side included representatives of current Chairman of the European Union (Finland), European Commission, European Council and the next Chairman of the Union (Portugal).
