The OIC Secretary General Meets in New York with the Chairman of the United Nations Economic and Social Council and Presides over the Proceedings of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Afghanistan and the Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir.

On the perch of the meetings of the fifty fourth session of the UN General Assembly currently held in New York, His Excellency Dr. Azeddine Laraki, OIC Secretary General met Tuesday evening with Mr. Francescoo Paolo Fulci, Chairman of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. During the meeting Dr. Laraki reviewed economic and social issues and particularly those relating to development assistance needed by the OIC Member States that can be extended or carried through the U.N.

On the other hand, Dr. Laraki, Secretary General, presided on Wednesday 29th September, 1999, over the proceedings of the meetings of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Afghanistan and the Islamic Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir. In his address to the meeting on Afghanistan the Secretary General voiced the view that in spite of all the problems still, still standing in the way of a just and comprehensive solution and despite the prevalent atmosphere of sincerity in that country, the Organization of the Islamic Conference is called upon to pursue its efforts for the attainment of the objectives as defined by the Twenty-sixth Session of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers.

During the meeting of the Islamic Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Laraki and all the participants expressed protests against all the measures recently adopted by the Indian authorities and which prevented the Kashmiri delegation from reaching New York to participate in the UN General Assembly’s fifty-fourth session.

The Secretary General also met with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Niger, Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Mayuaki with whom he undertook a review of the political situation currently prevailing in Niger and the results of the preliminary measures adopted by the Nigerian government for the normalization of the conflict. Dr. Laraki also had a meeting with Mr. Antoine Kalawole, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Benin and Mr. Moustapha Othman Ismail, Minister of Foreign Relations of Sudan, a meeting which was devoted to the review of various agenda items of the Annual Coordination Meeting of the Islamic States Foreign Ministers scheduled to be held on 1st October, 1999 in New York.
