THE OIC Statement after the election of the Chairperson

The OIC Statement on the Election of the Chairperson of the 59th Session of Commission on Human Rights

20 January 2003

Madame Chairsperson,

On behalf of the Member States of the OIC, I have great pleasure to warmly congratulate you on your election as the Chairperson of the 59th Session of the Commission on Human Rights. The OIC has full confidence in your wisdom and leadership abilities. We are convinced that you would guide our deliberations wisely and constructively.

Our felicitations are extended in equal measure to the other members of the Bureau.

The OIC strongly urges that the unfortunate episode of the election be put behind us. The Commission has an onerous agenda to address at this session. We should not allow differences of opinion on this issue to cast a shadow over our deliberations. In this context we are gratified by the decision of the African Group to desist from calling for a vote on the nominee of the Western European and Other Group for one of the positions of Vice-Chairman. This wise step must be considered a salutary augury for our future work.

The OIC reiterates its commitment for dialogue and cooperation and hopes that this sentiment would be reciprocated in full to ensure a smooth deliberative process in the Commission.

We assure you, Madame Chairperson, of the OIC’s unqualified cooperation in making the 59th Session a unique success.

May I also take this opportunity to register our appreciation for the constructive leadership provided by your distinguished predecessor Ambassador Krzysztof Jakubowski of Poland during the preceding session. He and his colleagues depart with an impressive legacy.

In conclusion the OIC welcomes the new High Commissioner for Human Rights and assures him of our complete cooperation in the discharge of his responsibilities.

I thanks you, Madame Chairperson.
