The three-day proceedings of the 37th Session of the Permanent Finance Committee (PFC) of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) commenced this morning, November 10, 2008, in Jeddah. Attending the meeting is a pool of representatives of the Member States and OIC subsidiary organs.
At the opening ceremony, the Secretary General, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, delivered a speech at the beginning of which he extended his thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, and to the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the material and moral support provided to the OIC. Saudi support, the Secretary General pointed out, has enabled the OIC to conduct its work in an atmosphere of tranquility and harmony. He also noted the high level of cooperation shown by Member States to support the work of the OIC.
The Secretary General dwelt on some milestones that have characterized the work of the Organization over the recent years in terms of dedicated work and achievements that are reflected on the ground culminating in realizations that constitute a source of pride for the OIC and the Member States.
Ihsanoglu referred to the ongoing reform process unraveling both internally and externally and stated that the OIC General Secretariat has adopted innovative managerial concepts and a forward-looking work culture and it has also pioneered a number of sound initiatives. The OIC, he added, has enhanced communication with its Member States and with both governmental and non-governmental organizations worldwide in addition to a large number of political, media and think-thank institutions.
The Secretary General underlined that the OIC has sought to position itself at the heart of events and boost communication with the decision-making centers at the UN as well as other international and regional organizations. It has also reinforced cooperation with influential think-tanks in a bid to better serve the highest interests of the Islamic Ummah.
At the political level, the Secretary General explained, the OIC initiated the opening of an ambassadorial level office in Iraq in order to be able to contribute effectively to Iraq's affairs.
He announced that the Organization's efforts to set up an office in Brussels are at present in the final stages.
The Secretary General called upon the OIC Member States to provide all support possible to enable the OIC and its subsidiary organs to properly perform their duties and achieve the desired goals and objectives.
