Convening of the Constitutive Meeting of the Transitional Governing Council in Iraq

The Secretary-General of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, H.E. Dr Abdelouahed BelKeziz considered the convening of the Constitutive Meeting of the Transitional Governing Council in Iraq to be a first step toward restoring Iraq’s sovereignty and national independence in conformity with UN Security Council’s resolution N. 1483.

The Secretary-General expressed his hope that the process of restoring power to the Iraqi people will continue so that it can run its own affairs. This should be considered as a legitimate request that goes through providing the Transitional Council with extended powers and setting up expeditiously an Iraqi government which will define and implement a policy for the country in conformity with the interests and national unity of the Iraqi people.

The Secretary-General hopes that this process will be carried out as soon as possible in order for Iraq to regain the place it deserves among the nations of the world and the privileged position it occupied in the Islamic world and in the Organisation of the Islamic Conference in particular.
