OIC Press Release
| 17 July 2002 |
Following the press release issued by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference on the measures taken by the Spanish authorities around the Moroccan Island of Leila, and the Organisation’s call for the need to resolve all differences through dialogue and peaceful means, the Organisation was surprised to learn of the Spanish armed forces’ occupation of the Island of Leila through the use of military force, even as the Spanish authorities had declared their wish to reach a negotiated solution for this issue.
The Organisation of the Islamic Conference can only regret such developments and proclaim its rejection of the method used by the Spanish authorities.
The organization of the Islamic Conference while calling for the immediate withdrawal of the Spanish forces from this Moroccan island, reaffirms that the real solution of this issue must be found through negotiations which take into consideration the geographical and historic, conditions of this small Moroccan island.
